When you invite the guests to your wedding, you need to take into consideration also that the guests may need to travel a long way to reach your wedding.
For those it is recommended to send the invitation half a year before, so the invited persons can have time to prepare and not to make any other plans. The invitation should include as much information as possible so the guests can accommodate to the type of wedding you have.
If some persons that aren't from the same town come to your wedding, they will certainly be too tired to drive a car back to their homes so, it would be better if you arrange some rooms in your house for them. If they are more than you can easily accommodate into your house, try to setup some hotels rooms not very far from the restaurant the wedding is taking place in and, if possible, even in the same building.
If you want to, you could treat your guests with something special at the hotel they will be staying in. At the hotel reception, you can leave bottles of fine wine, snacks, champagne or just a thanking note for them because they made a sacrifice coming to your wedding.
For the out of town persons invited at your wedding, you should organize special events and include them, or make them part of the wedding rehearsal so they won't think or have the impression they have traveled such a long way just for a few hours.
You can arrange special activities for them, like an outdoors trip or a tennis outing. If the groom and bride are too busy with the wedding, there are always the parents of them that can easily attend the guests.
At thereception, try to put the out of town guests near people they know, so they won't feel uncomfortable or they might feel they don't belong there.
If they are near people they know they are able to have a good time because we all know that it is company that makes the atmosphere.
