Pro-Wrestling today is definitely controversial sport-like form of entertainment. All the wrestler's have their names and scripts, and fall somewhere in a hall-of-fame. They each have their own slew of fans that go all out to show their loyalty, much like football fans do for their favorite teams. They sure get rowdy sometimes, most of the time, in good sporting taste. Though a few do get out of hand at times, and hopefully the arena does put them in their place as well.
Most pro-wrestlers these days are career, similar to actors with a long-term role in a soap opera, right down to the contracts. Just like acting also, not everyone is able to stick with it for various reasons. Some just unluckily get cut, while others become a liability (arrogant or egotistical in ways that keep the show from going on) and are simply terminated. Those that meet the test of time prosper, and the rest often wind up back home where they came from.
While it might root in the wrestling of the Olympic Games, things are considerably different today. The rules change to let the show go on. 20 years ago, fights out of the ring had very stiff rules on the length and had to get back in the ring quick. Today matches sometimes spend more time just outside the ring than between the ropes. Whereas once it was closer to boxing where nothing was allowed below the belt, now it's usually no-holds-barred.
Yet another side is how a lot of ex-wrestlers have the same downfalls as actors and musicians even. Overdoses, suicides, and other less fatal outcomes are far from unheard of in wrestlers of the past. And like some athletes, some are out of action from physical problems not only from wrestling, but the life style that comes from it. It's not unheard of for a stalker to go after a wrestler in real life, as they're as prone to this sort as anyone else.
In the process of living up to an image, and even further using artificial means to keep their appearances (muscles by steroids more than by exercise) many wrestlers have burned out, while others have wound up in trouble for possession of controlled substances. Others let their ego get the best of them too, and in real life end up in various troubles for that as well, ranging from numerous disturbing the peace, vandalism, and more civil matters such as child support and lawsuits related to that. They are definitely magnets for suing lawyers too, and with modern west coast court focus, also examples to be made of.
Among it all there are some good examples out there as well. The thought towards children that prevailed thru Hulk Hogan over the years, the works of Sgt Slaughter, and the many experiences of those that had the opportunity to watch Andre the Giant thru his years, attest that there are always stars that stand out above the rest. While many will just give credit to the old, maybe it would be a good time to demand more of these people in the Arena. We need good works now as much as we did then.
